Everyone’s in Town for the Holidays: A McKinney Group Outing for All Ages

Julie Beyer • October 23, 2026

TL;DR

•  Nobody needs to own a firearm: Our rental list covers pistols, revolvers, rifles, ARs, AKs, shotguns, and youth .22 rifles.

•  Not Everyone needs experience: Beginners need an experienced family member or friend alongside them, or a lesson first, and private group lessons are available on request. If you prefer a classroom setting, we offer NSSF First Shots with a certified instructor.

•  Kids can come: Children eight and older are welcome when directly supervised by a parent or legal guardian, and we keep youth rifles on hand.

•  Out-of-state guests can shoot: A valid government-issued photo ID is ALL you need. Texas residency only applies to FFL transfers, not to range time.

•  Big group? The 300° simulator runs up to five people through the same scenario at once, and we have group lessons, private range rentals, and event space for up to two hundred guests.

•  No membership required: We're open to the public.

•  Hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 7 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 6 pm, closed Mondays.

Family in town between Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's? The Range in McKinney is set up for groups.

This guide covers what a group visit here involves, what we provide so your guests don't have to bring anything, what the age rules are, what an out-of-state visitor needs, and how the day works whether you're bringing three people or thirty.

Want the short version? Walk in during business hours. No appointment and no membership required. If your group is six or more, call ahead to schedule lanes.

What A Group Visit Here Looks Like

You don't need to book anything to bring a small group in during business hours. A group of six or more needs to call ahead and schedule lanes. Walk in, check in at the counter, and everyone heading into the live-fire range or the simulator signs a waiver, with a parent or legal guardian signing for any minor. From there, you select rentals for anyone who needs one, and buy ammunition and targets at the counter. Eye and ear protection is required, and if your guests didn't bring their own, it's available on site.

We have eighteen climate-controlled lanes across two bays, nine lanes in each, at twenty-five yards, rated for pistol and rifle and fitted with wireless turning target carriers. Range Safety Officers are in the shooting bay to ensure safety, and their commands are to be followed immediately.

A recent Google reviewer brought guests who had never shot before and wrote: "Sergio and the rest of the team were very professional. I brought first-time shooters with me and Sergio made sure to help us to make sure we were safe. Keep up the great job!"

Call to reserve space for our private and group lessons with a certified instructor, and we'll talk through the available options for your group before you come in.

No firearms. No problem.

Our rental list runs deep enough that a party who doesn’t own firearms can all shoot and enjoy the experience.  It covers revolvers and semi-automatic pistols in a range of sizes and calibers, and a range of rifles including AR-15s in .223/5.56, AKs in 7.62x39, 9mm carbines, .22 rifles, and a 12-gauge shotgun. We also keep youth .22 rifles on hand for the younger shooters in the group.

Two rules shape how that works in practice. All rental firearms must be used with ammunition purchased from The Range in McKinney, which the counter stocks, and the age minimums differ by type: handgun rentals require you to be twenty-one unless you hold an LTC, while rifle rentals require you to be eighteen. Shotguns on our lanes are slugs only.

Rental availability can change, so if someone in your group has a specific model in mind, call ahead.

What guests bring vs. what The Range in McKinney provides, from ID to rentals

Kids, teens, grandparents, and extended family

Children eight and older are welcome when directly supervised by a parent or legal guardian, who signs a waiver for them, and we keep youth rifles on hand. You must be eighteen to shoot unaccompanied, which means anyone younger needs a parent or guardian in the lane with them. On rentals, the age minimums are twenty-one for a handgun unless you hold an LTC, and eighteen for a rifle.

Grandparents shoot here the same as anyone else, and our Silver membership is built for retirees sixty-five and older, with unlimited range time Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Guests Visiting From Out Of State

To shoot on our lanes, a visitor needs a valid government-issued photo ID or a valid passport, and that's the whole requirement. Hunting licenses cannot be used as ID at the range.

Texas residency isn't part of it. That requirement applies to completing an FFL transfers, which is a firearm purchase rather than a range visit, so a relative who flew in for the week can shoot with you on a Saturday without anything extra.

Nobody In The Group Has Done This Before

Here’s how to handle it.

Beginners don't go into the range without help. It's a safety rule. A new shooter needs an experienced family member or friend with them, or a lesson. For a group of beginners, call ahead and schedule a group lesson, and any group of six or more is required to call first to schedule lanes or a lesson. On weekends and holidays, it’s not a sure thing; we accept walk-in groups when there is room. To guarantee a spot, call ahead to schedule. Our staff will take it from there. Our instructors are certified, some with military or law enforcement experience.

The second option is to start in the simulator, which is the gentlest entry point we have because no live ammunition is involved. More on that in a moment.

For a guest who wants a structured introduction of their own, NSSF First Shots is a great option for brand-new shooters. Scheduling a private lesson online is a perfect fit for beginners. You choose the day and time, and our certified instructors provide a private, customized lesson for your skill set and goals. Sheri Bolton has been bringing groups of women in on Tuesdays and wrote: "I love that I've been able to bring other women along and make it a fun Ladies Night experience. We already have another group coming next Tuesday!"

The 300° simulator for teenagers and adults and why it works for groups

If you're bringing a mixed group of beginner and experienced teenage and adult shooters, this is the piece to build the visit around. Sign up online and reserve the date and time that works best for your group. You can even sign the waiver online to make the check-in procedure quicker. The simulator is a five-screen system with a 300-degree field of view that runs up to five people through the same scenario at once, with no live ammunition, and the scenario types cover marksmanship, competition, judgment, and precision shooting in military and law enforcement settings. Our team will help you pick the scenarios that fit what your group is actually interested in.

The firearms available in it are the GLOCK 17 GEN 4, the SIG P320 M17, and the KAC M4, and you can book a 30 or 60-minute session, or reserve it by the hour, half day, or full day as part of an event booking. You won't find this system at any other range in Texas or the surrounding states, and here it's open to the public.

It puts everyone in the group into the same thing at the same time regardless of experience. Sessions are non-refundable, though they can be rescheduled or issued as store credit.

Range Rules Worth Knowing Before You Walk In

Our staff walks every group through these at check-in.

•  Waivers: Everyone who enters the live-fire range or the simulator signs a waiver, and a parent or legal guardian signs for any minor.

•  Range Safety Officer commands: Range Safety Officers are in the shooting bay at all times, and their commands are to be followed immediately.

•  Eye and ear protection: Required, no ear pods, and available on site.

•  Holster draw: Allowed once you show proficiency to an RSO; handgun hip holster draw is allowed.  No appendix, cross-body, back, or shoulder holster draws are allowed.

•  Rapid fire: Allowed once you have been cleared for it, either through our class or by a Range Safety Officer.

•  Ammunition: Home reloads are not permitted. Our restricted ammo also includes steel core, frangible, green tip, armor piercing, incendiary, and tracer rounds. For the complete list of prohibited ammo, go to therangeinmckinney.com/indoor-range. Shotguns are slugs only.

•  Closing: Last Mag is called ten minutes before closing time, so plan the end of your visit around it.

The Range Itself

There are eighteen climate-controlled lanes across two bays, nine in each, at twenty-five yards, rated for pistol and rifle and fitted with wireless turning target carriers, with Range Safety Officers in the shooting bay at all times.

Our range air is never recirculated, and the system only introduces clean, fresh, outdoor air.

While Part Of Your Group Is Shooting

For anyone in the group who isn't shooting, The Range in McKinney is a licensed firearms dealer with a stocked retail area carrying firearms, ammunition, and accessories, so there's somewhere to browse in the meantime. We have a comfortable lounge to view the lanes or watch TV. We offer services including hand cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, expedited cleaning, and optic installation. If a family member brought a firearm in from out of town that needs attention, or somebody bought one online and needs the transfer completed, both happen here. FFL transfers are handled on site, though a transfer requires Texas residency and a valid Texas Driver's License or Texas ID, and we are now accepting NFA transfers.

Training, if somebody wants to learn

If someone in your group wants to keep going, here's what's available.

NSSF First Shots is our class for brand-new shooters, and private lessons pair up to three people one-on-one with a certified instructor who builds the session around their skill set and goals. Texas License to Carry classes include both the classroom portion and the live-fire qualification, held in our comfortable classrooms and climate-controlled indoor range. We also run safety team training for churches, schools, and businesses with people responsible for the safety of others.

Our instructors are certified, some with military or law enforcement experience, and the current class schedule and private lesson availability are on our training page.

What To Bring

The list is short.

•  A government-issued photo ID for everyone who's shooting. Hunting licenses cannot be used as ID at the range.

•  Eye and ear protection, which is required, with no ear pods, and available on site if your guests didn't bring their own.

•  Your own firearms and ammunition if you have them, bring them. Your ammo is subject to restrictions. Rental firearms use ammunition purchased here.

A few things to leave at home: Our restricted ammo includes home reloads, steel core, frangible, green tip, armor piercing, incendiary, and tracer rounds. For the complete list of prohibited ammo, go to therangeinmckinney.com/indoor-range. Shotguns are slugs only.

Planning Your Visit

We're open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm, closed Mondays, with Last Mag called ten minutes before closing time. Appointments aren't required for lane time for individuals and small groups, though you need to call ahead for a group of six or more, a group lesson, a private range rental, or a group simulator booking. Private lessons for up to 3 and simulator appointments for up to 5 people should be made online.

You'll find us at 415 Industrial Blvd, McKinney, TX 75069, with Allen, Frisco, Plano, Prosper, Fairview, Melissa, Princeton, Lucas, Anna, and Farmersville all nearby. A membership is never required, since we're open to the public for range time, training, the gun store, and FFL transfers.

Why An Indoor Range Works For A Holiday Group

One practical note about doing this indoors. All eighteen lanes are climate-controlled, so the plan doesn't depend on the weather or on how early it gets dark, and our range air is never recirculated because the system only introduces clean, fresh, outdoor air. With hours running to 7 pm Tuesday through Saturday and to 6 pm on Sunday, an afternoon or an early evening both work.

Ladies Day, Every Tuesday

If you have women visiting and a Tuesday open, that's the day to come. Every Tuesday, women receive half off lane fees and free rentals at The Range in McKinney, with no membership, no sign-up, and we're open Tuesdays from 10 am to 7 pm. The free rental means a guest doesn't need to own a firearm to take part, since our rental list covers pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns, and ammunition for rental firearms is purchased here. If you don’t have any experience, book a private lesson.

Sheri Bolton has been bringing groups in on Tuesdays and wrote: "I love that I've been able to bring other women along and make it a fun Ladies Night experience. We already have another group coming next Tuesday!" She also had this to say about the staff: "I especially appreciate the Range Safety Officers. They are patient, knowledgeable, and always willing to answer questions or help when you need it, which makes such a difference when you're still learning."

Memberships, If Somebody Keeps Coming Back

Four membership levels are available, plus two built for organizations.

Individual and memberships include unlimited range time with no lane fees, twelve guest passes, discounts on training, rentals, cleanings, and 2 FREE FFL transfers, with monthly or yearly payment available. Family memberships extend the same benefits to a household.

Range Buddy covers two people who shoot together, and Silver is designed for retirees sixty-five and older, with unlimited range time Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. On the organization side, Corporate memberships suit businesses of any size looking for a place to entertain clients, hold meetings, host holiday parties, and run employee or group outings and special events, while Professional memberships are built for trainers and for private or professional groups of any size.

Memberships are twelve-month commitments that start on the date of purchase, and canceling requires written notice thirty days in advance, with no refunds issued. First responders, law enforcement, veterans, and active military receive twenty percent off lane fees and twenty percent off Individual and Family memberships, so bring your ID.

A membership is never required.

Gift Cards

Gift cards are available for in-store purchases and can be used for range time, rentals, simulator time, lessons, firearms, and items in our store, though they are not refundable or redeemable for cash. Ask at the counter on your way out.

What Guests Say

We hold 4.5 stars across 289 Google reviews. One recent visitor wrote:

"Everything was perfect from registering online, to watching the safety video, the easy-to-navigate online forms, the facility is absolutely one of the best, the instructor was friendly and knowledgeable, and the lady at the check-in and checkout counter was very professional, helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. It is very conveniently located, and I highly recommend the Range in McKinney."

The Range in McKinney is the work of its owners, Thom and Julie Beyer. Thom has loved shooting since he was eight years old, when he learned on his family's property. He and Julie set out to build the range they always wanted: spotless, welcoming, professionally run, and genuinely family-friendly. To get every detail right, they traveled the country studying the best ranges in the business and brought those lessons home to McKinney.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I bring a group to the range without booking ahead?

Yes. Lane time doesn't require an appointment during business hours unless you have no experience or an experienced shooter to come with. No membership is required. Call ahead if you have a group of 6 or more, so we can schedule lanes or a group lesson. Call ahead for a private range rental or book a simulator session online.

Do my guests need to own a firearm?

No. Our rental list covers handguns, rifles including AR-15s in .223/5.56, AKs in 7.62x39, 9mm carbines, .22 rifles, and a 12-gauge shotgun. We also keep youth .22 rifles on hand for the younger shooters in the group.

How old do you have to be to shoot?

Children eight and older are welcome when directly supervised by a parent or legal guardian who has signed a waiver for them. You must be eighteen to shoot unaccompanied. Handgun rentals require you to be twenty-one unless you hold an LTC, and rifle rentals require you to be eighteen.

Can someone visiting from out of state shoot at your range?

Yes. A valid government-issued photo ID or a valid passport is what's needed to shoot. Texas residency applies to completing an FFL transfer, which is a firearm purchase, not range time. Hunting licenses cannot be used as ID at the range.

What does everyone need to bring?

A government-issued photo ID. Eye and ear protection is required; no ear pods, and it is available on site if your guests didn't bring their own. Everything else, including rental firearms, ammunition, and targets, is available at the counter.

Nobody in our group has ever shot before. Is that a problem?

No, as long as they have help. Beginners need an experienced family member or friend with them, or a lesson, before they shoot on the range. Call ahead to schedule a group lesson with a certified instructor, and groups of six or more are required to call before coming in. You can also go online to book private lessons for up to 3 people, and schedule an appointment in our 300° simulator, which uses no live ammunition, or enroll a guest in NSSF First Shots, our class for brand-new shooters.

How many people can use the simulator at once?

Up to five people can experience the same scenario at once. It's a five-screen system with a 300-degree field of view and no live ammunition, available in 30- or 60-minute sessions, or by the hour, half day, or full day for event bookings. The simulator firearms available are the GLOCK 17 GEN 4, the SIG P320 M17, and the KAC M4. You won't find this system at any other range in Texas or the surrounding states, and here it's open to the public.

Do you have space for food and drinks with a group?

For event bookings, yes. There's a catering prep area (no cooking) with running water and a catering menu available on request, plus tables and chairs and vendor load-in. We're a BYOB facility; TABC-licensed bartenders are required for events serving alcohol, and we provide them; and we require scheduling the range and simulator portion first, and the reception after.

Can we bring our own ammunition?

Yes, for your own firearms, and it’s subject to certain restrictions. Home reloads are not permitted; commercial reloads are. Our restricted ammo also includes steel core, frangible, green tip, armor piercing, incendiary, and tracer rounds. For the complete list of prohibited ammo, go to therangeinmckinney.com/indoor-range.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. Gift cards are available for purchase in store. They can be used to purchase training, services, and items in our store and are not refundable or redeemable for cash.
